Why Geography?

Welcome to The English Martyrs Geography Department Open Evening Display. Please feel free to browse through what ever you see available to you.

Why do we teach geography in schools today? Check out the video below to see if it answers any questions.

Geography provides you with skills which will prepare you for the ever changing world that we are all part of.

The geography of happiness?

Does money make us happier? Are people that live in More Economically Developed Countries (MEDCs) happier than people that live in Less Economically Developed Countries (LEDCS)?

Should we concentrate more on quality of life rather than standard of living?

Perhaps the politicians are finally listening too check out the link below to find out more

Research done by the University of Leicester suggests Denmark is the worlds happiest country.

Which country do you think you would be happiest to live in? Would you give up your Playstation, your bike your Ipod, The “stuff” in your life to make sure that you were happy?

Cheers

25% of the worlds mammals could face extinction

Some more geography in the news today; As a direct result of people destroying habitats through deforestation many species are facing extinction. The highest concentration of extinctions would most likely occur in south east Asia where deforestation is at its most destructive as developing countries try and exploit as many resources as possible.

Year 7 – If you could dance anywhere in the world, where would you dance?

Welcome Year 7.

The English Martyrs Geography Department hope you have all settled in to your new surroundings and you are enjoying your Geography lessons. As a bit of a treat, here is the ‘Where’s Matt’ video you all enjoyed so much!

I think his dancing has become much slower since the first video in 2005. He must be getting old!

And here is the third one that lucky old Matt has filmed!

How about some new dance moves Matt? Not that I am one to comment!

Year 9 Mallorca Enquiry

Hey guys

Here are some helpful websites you could use when looking for information to include in your Mallorca enquiries.

Happy hunting!

Holiday programmes guide to Mallorca. Wish you were here?

Palma’s tourist information website is here:

http://www.palmademallorca.es/portalPalma2/home.jsp?language=en#

Mallorca online – wealth of tourist information about Mallorca

http://www.mallorcaonline.com/malhomu.htm

The Balearic Islands tourist information website can be found here

http://www.illesbalears.es/ing/majorca/home.jsp

A very good website with good maps here: http://seemallorca.com/

Some general climate information for Mallorca: http://palma-de-mallorca.costasur.com/en/clima.html

For all of those people with level 7 targets, it is important to show an understanding of sustainable tourism in Mallorca.

Some websites (which I have to admit are a little difficult to understand but then who ever said getting a level 7 was easy?) can be found below.

http://www.un.org/esa/sustdev/mgroups/success/1999/tour8.htm A summary by the UN of Calvia’s Agenda 21 initiative which was mentioned on the video we watched.

The original strategy is here: http://unpan1.un.org/intradoc/groups/public/documents/un/unpan002855.pdf

You may be able to gather some interesting facts to add to your enquiries from this essay: http://www.muenster.org/kantgym/download/molz04.pdf

We’re all going on our summer holidays…..

Well its that time again…. Only one more get up until the summer hols! But that is no reason to stop looking at the LiveGeography blog, Oh No!!

Keep in touch and lets us know what you have been up to….Where have you been to on your hols? You could send the EMS Geography Department a postcard from your hols. Have you taken part in any voluntary work? Is there anything (more than likely by the way, in fact I’d bet my two dogs on it!) happening in the news during the summer hols that is geographical?

Just because you’re not in school doesnt mean we need to stop thinking about issues, enquiring about places and learning about the world around us. Be interested in the places that you visit, who lives there? What language do they speak? What jobs do they do? What is the weather like? What do they eat? What does the landscape look like? Are there any different animals there? Are tourists damaging or enhancing the environment/economy? What has changed from the last time you visited? Why? There are many many questions you can ask yourself.

I hope you all have a relaxing, safe and fun hols.

Take care and keep in touch

Mr M

Your opinions please

Hello all,

I’ve just got back from a meeting with other Geography teachers from across the county (Imagine how exciting that was!) and we decided that it was really important for you guys to actually take part in Geography and not just learn about it as it happens around you. I hope you all agree.

Anyway, I was wondering, not being so young myself anymore, what is it that really bothers you? If you could change somthing in the world, city, your local area, what would it be? It can be anything you want? We are really interested to hear what you say.

The idea would be to decide upon something and then join with other schools across the city and county to change what ever it was that you guys decided upon.

If you dont participate in this thread then we really cant do too much. A very famous person once said you should be the change you want to see in the world so lets do that. Talk to me!

Mr M
