As part of their environmental work the Eco Challenge crew took part in the OPAL National Air Quality Survey. The students went out on Friday afternoon to test the air quality around the school site.

To test the air quality, the students were looking at lichen as a bio indicator. Some Lichens are Nitrogen loving and some were Nitrogen hating.

Unfortunately, the majority of the Lichens the students found were Nitrogen loving which indicates the air around the school was polluted.

We decided one possible source of pollution could be the main road as the high number of cars produce Nitrous Oxide.

Geography students at English Martyrs have achieved extremely well at both GCSE and A-level.

A-level students achieved 100%  A – C grades

GCSE students achieved 83% A – C grades

34% achieved A and A*

Extremely well done.

Here are a few bits to help you with writing your report on the floods in Mozambique in 2000.

The task..

Imagine that you are a T.V. news reporter at a national t.v. station. You have just received an email from your boss to say that there have been reports of a major flood disaster in Mozambique. You have to work with the foreign correspondent, who is in Mozambique, to produce a 5 minutes article reporting the main events.

What you need to do..

Work in pairs. Decide who will be the reporter in the studio and who will be in Mozambique (reporting back via satellite link).

What you need to include..

·        A starter

·        Where the floods have happened

·        Brief details of the causes

·        The effects of the floods (interview with an eye witness)

·        How people are responding so far.

How your work will be assessed..

In groups of four, you will present your news report with an optional power point presentation, in front of the class.

It will be assessed by your teacher and by the class.

The solution to some of the problems caused by globalisation could be Fairtrade – Have a look at their website for some videos of how they have improved the lives of many people.

We have been looking in to the governments idea of building eco towns and we understand that there are people that are in favour of the idea and against the idea.

You have been asked to create a role play acting out a radio debate regarding the good points and the bad points of eco towns.

There are many, many websites from which you gather independent research for food shortages in LEDW. So much so that you could spend a whole afternoon doing so. (I know because I was perusing for the whole afternoon)

1. Gathering up to date information on case studies for food shortages in LEDW
2.  Understanding global interdependence means that LEDW and MEDW are dependent on each other for economic development and sustainability
