First there was your Carbon footprint, now we have water footprints

 Hey,

I dont want to depress anyone unduly about the state of our planet, however I came across another article in the Independent Newspaper. Give it a read. We all know our Carbon Footprint is the amount of carbon we are responsible for releasing in to the atmosphere. How many of us are aware of the amount of water that we use? Take 5 minutes to read the article. Is there anything we can do to reduce the amount of water we use?

Cheers

  • Hey sir
thanks for the info i never realised that we use water to such an extent. But what can we do about it we need to eat and drink, plus if we listen to everything these people tell us we probably couldnt do anything in fear of destroying the environment!

  • I know what you are saying iloverivers, Like I said in the original post, I dont want to depress anyone and I know there is a danger of people thinking that they can’t do anything anymore without damaging the planet. I do believe however that knowing about a problem is the first step to being able to do something about it.
What can you do to limit the amount of water you use? Here are some ideas:
    1) Turn the tap off whilst you are brushing your teeth. In a family of 4 if each person left the tap on whilst brushing their teeth they would waste 26,000 litres of water per year.

    2) Have a shower instead of a bath, or if you only have a bath, share the water.

    3) Collect rainwater in a water butt to use to water the garden.

There are many things we can do. check out the website below.

  • I completley understand what you are saying. I personally think that we should use water like countries such as Spain, They collect their very little rainwater in a tank, and when they want a bath the environmentally friendly residents who do not have elecricity heat their water in the pipes by solar power and make do with only luke warm water. I think that Solar Power and Water Tanks are the way of the future!!

  • P.S After we have used any water thet is now dirty e.g a bath or washing up water. We take it out into the Garden and use it to water the plants and trees to keep them alive in the hot dry weather of Spain.

  • Thats exactly what I’m talking about Hippie Hazy. Now all we have to do is persuade a few (million)other people to come around to our way of thinking!

    Wow!
I honestly did’t think the situation was really that bad when it came to water.
I agree with hippiehazy, in portugal they collect all the rain that they get throughout the year and use it when neccasary. If you have a shower in some places, like we stayed when you use it for too long the water just runs out! They look after the environment much better than we do, as most things are solar powered including traffic lights. We are so far behind some parts of Europe when it comes to saving the planet.

  • You might think my views are synical but can we actually save the planet! I mean we’ve done extreme damage to pretty much everything! And now it seems that are water usage is too much to go along with: electricity, oil etc. How can we change things we’ve done like for ever?

(well not ever but nearly for ever)

I agree with you, we can slow down the process, but we can not save the planet completely, it’s to late and most of the damage has already been done.

Also, sir why has it taken people so long to figure out we are doing and how we live is causing the planet so much trouble?

  • yeah good point meanderer! I agree surely we must have none before or is it that we use resources so much in our everyday lives that the consequences are only just catching up with us …?

  • Hi sir
Just read that and has really scared me. I never realised how much of an effect it had. I agree with iloverivers. What can be done now to solve global warming. I heard that when all bees become extinct we will die within 5 years!!!!!!!!!!! SCARY

  • Wow, yes…. I’ve just done a bit of research on this…. It was Albert Einstein who first predicted the effect that the extinction of bees would have on people. Here’s some information from an article in the Telegraph

“The depopulation of bees could have a huge impact on the environment, which is reliant on the insects for pollination. If taken to the extreme, crops, fodder - and therefore livestock - could die off if there are no pollinating insects left.”

“Bees are more important than poultry in terms of human nutrition. Bees from one hive can visit a million flowers within a 400 square kilometre area in just one day.”

“Bees are not only working for our welfare, they are also perfect indicators of the state of the environment. We should take note.”

The BBC back this up with a little more information here:

Isn’t it amazing how our world is so intertwined even the tiniest of creatures are vital to the health of our world.

You’ve created a really thought provoking discussion guys, I’m impressed.
