Well its that time again…. Only one more get up until the summer hols! But that is no reason to stop looking at the LiveGeography blog, Oh No!!
Keep in touch and lets us know what you have been up to….Where have you been to on your hols? You could send the EMS Geography Department a postcard from your hols. Have you taken part in any voluntary work? Is there anything (more than likely by the way, in fact I’d bet my two dogs on it!) happening in the news during the summer hols that is geographical?
Just because you’re not in school doesnt mean we need to stop thinking about issues, enquiring about places and learning about the world around us. Be interested in the places that you visit, who lives there? What language do they speak? What jobs do they do? What is the weather like? What do they eat? What does the landscape look like? Are there any different animals there? Are tourists damaging or enhancing the environment/economy? What has changed from the last time you visited? Why? There are many many questions you can ask yourself.
I hope you all have a relaxing, safe and fun hols.
Take care and keep in touch

Hello all,
I’ve just got back from a meeting with other Geography teachers from across the county (Imagine how exciting that was!) and we decided that it was really important for you guys to actually take part in Geography and not just learn about it as it happens around you. I hope you all agree.
Anyway, I was wondering, not being so young myself anymore, what is it that really bothers you? If you could change somthing in the world, city, your local area, what would it be? It can be anything you want? We are really interested to hear what you say.
The idea would be to decide upon something and then join with other schools across the city and county to change what ever it was that you guys decided upon.
If you dont participate in this thread then we really cant do too much. A very famous person once said you should be the change you want to see in the world so lets do that. Talk to me!

I know we have pretty much finished our crime enquiries, I thought some of you might find this useful/interesting.
It looks like the government have just undertaken a crime enquiry of their own and come up with some ways in which people can find out more about crime in their local area and suggests some ideas that people think would help reduce crime.
One of the governments ideas is to make crime maps of our local areas that tell us which crimes are taking place, what the police are doing and what we can do to reduce crime. These maps would most definitely be made use geographical information systems (GIS).
I wonder if we could try and make our own in the future? Click here to view the article. What do you think? The Independent also writes about 20 ways to make people feel safer. Feel free to leave a comment.

Join the Eco Martyrs and become part of the solution……
I would like the Eco Martyrs to be a group of young people from school committed to taking part in practical activities that will benefit the school environment, our local area and moving out to help wherever we can. The Eco Martyrs will be a flexible group willing to meet afterschool, before school and may be even during school depending on our task, ready and willing to learn more about the environment, educate others and be willing to get involved and get our hands dirty to improve OUR environment.

At least 6 people have been killed and 140 injured after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit a rural region of northern Japan.
That’s 4 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or above in the last 2 months. I think Mother Nature must be trying to tell us something.
Just to show that even the richest of countries can still suffer from natural disasters click here to see the devastating effects of flooding in Iowa’s second city, Cedar Rapids, one of the USAs largest producers of Corn and Soya beans.

I travelled by bus to Loughborough yesterday. It cost me a whopping £1.50. What I was very disappointed to see was that Woods coaches are raising ticket prices by 10 - 15% as a result of the increases in the price of fuel.
Fuel prices are increasing as a result of dwindling oil reserves and increased demand. Is it just me or should we be trying to reduce the demand for oil by perhaps making public transport a more attractive form of transport? Surely by increasing ticket prices Woods Coaches are doing the exact opposite.
My taxi fair on the ride home had also increased by £1. I was not happy!
At the moment the price for a barrel of oil is $139, it has been predicted that this price may rise to $250 per barrel. I hate to think how much that will be on my bus fare to Loughborough!
I would like to see much cheaper public transport to reduce peoples infatuation with their cars, instead of governments calling for more oil to be pumped out of the ground to meet demand surely we should be concentrating on alternative energy and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

It’s not just my bus fare that I need to worry about though. Click here to find out how rising fuel prices are affecting other areas of our lives.
