Eco Challenge Crew

As part of their environmental work the Eco Challenge crew took part in the OPAL National Air Quality Survey. The students went out on Friday afternoon to test the air quality around the school site.

To test the air quality, the students were looking at lichen as a bio indicator. Some Lichens are Nitrogen loving and some were Nitrogen hating.

Unfortunately, the majority of the Lichens the students found were Nitrogen loving which indicates the air around the school was polluted.

We decided one possible source of pollution could be the main road as the high number of cars produce Nitrous Oxide.

Flooding in Mozambique 2000

mozfloodHappy Easter year 7

Here are a few bits to help you with writing your report on the floods in Mozambique in 2000.

The task..

Imagine that you are a T.V. news reporter at a national t.v. station. You have just received an email from your boss to say that there have been reports of a major flood disaster in Mozambique. You have to work with the foreign correspondent, who is in Mozambique, to produce a 5 minutes article reporting the main events.

What you need to do..

Work in pairs. Decide who will be the reporter in the studio and who will be in Mozambique (reporting back via satellite link).

What you need to include..

·        A starter

·        Where the floods have happened

·        Brief details of the causes

·        The effects of the floods (interview with an eye witness)

·        How people are responding so far.

How your work will be assessed..

In groups of four, you will present your news report with an optional power point presentation, in front of the class.

It will be assessed by your teacher and by the class.

Useful web sites

Take your time to read through the BBC’s special report here. There are plenty of eye witness account, pictures and background information you can include.

The story of Joao Nhassengo

The story of the baby born in a tree

Cyclone Eline

Yr 9 Globalisation – Problems and Benefits

GlobalisationFollowing our class discussions regarding your magazine article; here are some links you may decide to use to help you. A word of warning…It’s been much easier for me to find information on the problems of globalisation rather than the benefits. Whether this is really the case is up to you to decide.

What is globalisation?

Here are some links to introduce you to the idea of globalisation

The BBC on globalisation - a very thorough and useful resource.

More from the BBC

Wikipedia does globalisation using the figures and changing them into a graph to use as evidence would really help your article and the level you achieve.

Guardian news report

McDonalds in Moscow…

Globalisation…the advantages and disadvantages from the BBC. Lots of peoples opinions on globalisation. Becareful as they are opinions and may not be backed up by fact.

Some positives of globalisation. A lot of reading but interesting all the same.

The Oxfam website containing the videos I showed you in class. You can find some case studies here which you will also find useful.

The peanut video!!

How globalisation and trade rules are creating a different kind of trade and turning the banana farmers to crime.

The excellent Clean Clothes Campaign website will help you with many of the issues that Trans National Corporations/Multi National Companies create. Browse the website and you will find lots of detail.

Check whether your favourite brands are being produced ethically here. No where near a comprehensive list but a good start.

Get a taste of what it would be like to work in a sweat shop with this simulation game.

Some more campaign websites here:

Labour behind the label

No Sweat - Make sure you look at the companies/brands link and the countries link.

War on Want

The solution to some of the problems caused by globalisation could be Fairtrade – Have a look at their website for some videos of how they have improved the lives of many people.

Yr 7 Eco Towns – Good or Bad?

We have been looking in to the governments idea of building eco towns and we understand that there are people that are in favour of the idea and against the idea.

You have been asked to create a role play acting out a radio debate regarding the good points and the bad points of eco towns.

Here are some websites that you might be interested to look at to gain extra information

The website FOR building Pennbury eco town can be found here

The website AGAINST building the Pennbury eco town can be found here
